The objective for the King Street landscape project was to utilize the existing infrastructure in the new landscape design and to identify, develop, and implement three important sustainable practices;
-Reduce the consumption of water for irrigation purposes and reduce the amount of landscape waste.
-Naturally increase soil fertility and stability to ensure a healthy growing environment for the plants.
-Improve the health and plant biodiversity within the urban environment.
Working within the framework provided by ‘ForeverGreen’, Bentall’s Responsible Property Management program, we established a series of colourful gardens throughout three Bentall properties. The gardens feature lush drought-tolerant foliage, native perennial grasses and bursts of seasonal blooms that bring colour to the urban mecca of King St. In order to achieve our environmental objectives we utilized drought-tolerant and native perennial varieties. These plant varieties have the capacity to renew themselves each year and once they are well-established, they will survive on the water they receive naturally through rainfall. Through the use of organic soils, fertilizers and mulches the gardens will receive nutrients from natural sources, thereby reducing the use of harsh, chemical fertilizers. By incorporating native plants, shrubs and grasses into the landscape design, the gardens also contributes to the health and biodiversity of our local ecosystem.
Bentall is widely recognized as a leader in advancing sound and sustainable environmental practices. We applaud their ingenuity and are glad to be part of this leading-edge Toronto project.
“Such a wonderful choice of plants, sedum, sage and day lilies. The delightful addition of lilacs is my personal favourite. Many of the plants will be familiar to all who have their own gardens at home and it’s a nice touch to see them where we all work.
